For over five years the 30 year old shell of a former Macys Department store sat vacant in Gwinnett Place Mall. Benning Construction was selected to bring the building up to code and convert 150,000 s.f. of the three story building into the first Mega Mart in the United States. Mega Mart, a South Korean grocery and retail company, with eleven stores in the Pacific Rim, is an upscale fresh food market specializing in produce and prepared foods as well as retail apparel, accessories and cosmetics.

 

The uncommon conversion of a department store into a grocery/ prepared foods store required 45% of the ground floor concrete slab to be replaced to accommodate plumbing, refrigeration and HVAC lines which support freezers and kitchen facilities. Further, Benning installed an escalator capable of carrying shopping carts between the first and the second floor and two new elevators for direct access to the third floor (future office space) from the parking lot.
